CIS 524 Bioinformatics I Course Abstract Since the most important trend in modern biology is the increasing availability of high-throughput data, an increasing quantity and diversity of data are major trends nowadays. To gain biological meaning from this data it is required that this data be integrated and that it be checked for errors and get organized. The challenges in producing high-quality, integrated datasets are critical to the success of bioinformatics researchy. Most of the primary data in the biological studies involve a great deal of numeric and text-like data, as a result of data representation transformed for computer-based analysis. For instance, DNA sequences are represented in text-like strings. This course will offer an introduction to the current bioinformatics trends as well as cutting-edge tool development strategies and informatics techniques in today's bioinformatics community, which students will apply to their class projects in the bioinformatics arena. Perl has become popular with biologists because it's so well-suited to several bioinformatics tasks. This course will introduces Perl programming as an important new laboratory skill; it presents a practical programming aspects of bioinformatics that can be immediately useful in the laboratory.
