CIS508 Course Abstract This course introduces the students to the exploration of tuning from the business perspective, and then moves on to explore tuning the database, the application that use the database, memory, and disk tuning. The course also highlights the areas that database administrators need to consider when implementing a database network strategy and configuring the connectivity management software that is the backbone of the database network architecture. Lecture one, illustrates the goals and steps involved in database tuning. Lecture two, discusses the definition and use of the alert log, trace files, and wait events. Lecture three, identifies how to employ these tools to assist you in tuning the Database server. Lecture four, presents the tuning issues for Online Transaction Processing (OLTP), Decision Support System (DSS), and Hybrid systems. Lecture five, discusses the tools used to diagnose SQL statement performance and the optimizer modes that enhance SQL statement performance. Lecture six, explains the characteristics of the buffer cache and how to tune the buffer cache. Lecture seven, illustrates the diagnostic tools used to tune the redo log buffer. Lecture eight, explains the table scan operations and file configuration. Lecture nine, discusses how to determine appropriate data block size. Lecture ten, discusses explains how to recognize, diagnose, and resolve performance issues associated with sorts. Lecture eleven, explores how to create a tuning session. Lecture twelve, presents Oracle networking solutions. Lecture thirteen, discusses the configuring of listener with Net8 Assistant. Lecture fourteen, describes how to create a Names server and how to configure a client profile.
