CIS502 Database Management Systems Course Abstract This course covers both the theoretical concepts of modern database systems and the practical use of commercial database systems (ORACLE). Students will learn the fundamentals of relational database, object-oriented relational database, database composite data types, database integrity, and database security. Topics covered include: Overview of the database approach versus the traditional file approach, concepts of database users and roles, database systemarchitecture, alternative approaches of database systems, basic characteristics of the relational model, basic data-structuring concepts and constraints of the entity-relationship model, functional dependencies and normal forms, procedures and triggers to perform the processing of complex business rules within the database server, concepts of distributed databases (DDBs), and distributed database management systems (DDBMSs).
